Exclusive new library of exotic and under-recognized typefaces

New York, New York, January 7, 2004 - Veer, a provider of unique visual elements and design-related products, today announced an exclusive new typeface collection named Umbrella™.

The Umbrella collection is a compilation of typefaces hand-picked from small foundries and independent designers around the world. Umbrella features typefaces by talented yet relatively unknown typographers, and typefaces by graphic designers better known for their other creative work. The Umbrella collection brings these deserving faces to a much wider audience in North America, through promotion in Veer catalogs and availability from the Veer web site.

Each typeface in the collection is chosen based on aesthetic relevance and technical quality, rather than a single stylistic approach. The initial selection features many script faces, reflecting the current demand for calligraphic and handwritten styles. The rest of the collection comprises decorative and display faces. The flexible, “buried treasure” philosophy behind Umbrella will guide future selections, which could include text families, picture fonts - faces of any style that impress Veer as striking and inventive.

With the launch of Umbrella, Veer introduces 46 faces by experienced typographers and award-winning designers, including seven exclusive world-premiere families. Orion is an upright, linear script face by renowned letterform designer Michael Doret, whose work has been commissioned by Nike, Time, and Playboy. Argentinian designers Alejandro Paul and Angel Koziupa present the casual, handwritten Argenta and the energetically sloped Malbeck. Brea is an original design that melds blackletter with pixels, by Californian Corey Holms, known for his work with HBO (The Sopranos logo), among others. Neil Summerour of Positype has chosen Umbrella to debut two new faces, the lighthearted Luce and the bold Sneakers Script. Miles Newlyn (creator of faces for Emigre, and David Carson-era Ray Gun magazine) presents the stylized blackletter Ferox.

“So many typefaces go unnoticed due to limited exposure, language barriers, or lack of effective marketing,” said Grant Hutchinson, type designer and founding partner of Veer. “Umbrella brings together a host of these lesser-known faces, giving them the exposure they deserve. These are such striking and usable typefaces - we think designers will be surprised and impressed by their quality.”

“The launch of Umbrella is very exciting for creatives and type designers alike,” said Corey Holms, designer and typographer whose identity, poster, and web site designs grace high-profile film, fashion, and technology companies. “It’s a novel and much-needed collection that shows the Veer team’s passion for type. As a creative, I know that finding the perfect typeface, and one that hasn’t been seen a million times before, can be a real challenge. Thankfully, Veer is dedicated to discovering and presenting these typographic gems to a wider audience, and marketing them in a way that hints at their creative possibilities.”

Type families in the Umbrella collection are priced starting at US$35 and are available for immediate download from veer.com. They are available for both Macintosh and Windows platforms in PostScript and TrueType formats. Many Umbrella fonts also contain alternate characters. Faces in the Umbrella type library can be previewed using Veer’s web-based interface, Flont. For more information or to browse the Umbrella type collection, users can visit veer.com/umbrella.
