New program supports young designers with special licensing and scholarships

New York, New York, November 18, 2004 - Veer, a provider of visual elements and design-related products, announced today that the company has launched a unique program that supports students pursuing design education. Veer’s new Student Program - the first of its kind in the visual content industry - offers special licensing on images and type, scholarships, a summer internship, and other distinct benefits to support undergraduates enrolled in an accredited design program.

Veer’s Student Program aims to introduce young designers to licensed photography, illustration, and type. By providing licensing discounts on Veer’s stock photography and type, the program encourages students to use legitimate, professional-quality content instead of questionable “found” images and “freeware” typefaces. Students can gain real-world experience in sourcing photos and type, allowing them to gain a practical understanding of the licensing process and the use of visual content as key ingredients in design.

“Since we started the company, we’ve had a tremendous response from students and educators alike who were inspired by our design-driven approach,” said Jacqueline Wallace, founding partner responsible for PR and strategic alliances. “Our aim has always been to share our passion for the design profession - for example, through the Ideas section of the Veer web site, event sponsorship, and community initiatives like these. Faculty members come to us looking for resources to share with their students. We constantly hear from students who love the Veer catalogs and web site, and are keen to use our images and type for their projects. This program lets them to do so, while familiarizing them with how image licensing works, and reinforcing the idea of respecting copyrights and intellectual property.”

Veer also offers scholarships to support deserving students in furthering their design education. The scholarships have been created in partnership with the Art Directors Club in the United States and the Society of Graphic Designers in Canada and will be awarded to two students each year who demonstrate excellence in the discipline of graphic design. In addition to scholarships, Veer’s internship program gives one student per year the opportunity to work alongside Veer’s award-winning in-house creative team for two months.

“We’re delighted that Veer is partnering with the Art Directors Club in support of two important educational initiatives in visual communications,” said Myrna Davis, ADC’s executive director. “A Veer scholarship will be offered as part of our National Scholarship Program, now in its second year, and Veer is the exclusive image company sponsor of the 2005 Invitational Student Portfolio Reviews. Part of the ADC mission is to encourage young people entering the field. The support of progressive companies like Veer, which share our commitment to creative excellence, is essential to the continuation of these programs. With these commitments Veer is making a vital contribution to the profession.”

Students and faculty can visit www.veer.com/ideas/students to get more information on how to qualify for student discounts, and apply for scholarships and the internship. The site includes a profile and portfolio of last year’s intern, Cameron Wakal. After registering, students can also access a starter kit of free images and type created with the support of Veer’s content partners: Digital Vision, PhotoAlto, Stockbyte, Image Source, Jukebox, ShinnType, Fountain, Red Rooster, Alias, and Device. New profiles and other relevant articles, galleries, and resources will be added regularly. Questions about the student program, or ideas for enhancing it, can be directed to students@veer.com
