New York, NY, September 10, 2007 - First Gary Hustwit’s film Helvetica explored the proliferation of this iconic typeface, then the Museum of Modern Art launched its 50 Years of Helvetica retrospective. Now, Blanka and Candy in association with Veer present 50, an exhibition of Helvetica-themed posters by 50 internationally renowned designers. 50 will be on view from September 15 to 30 at the Espeis Gallery in New York.
The 50 exhibition imagines the world from the perspective of Helvetica itself. Each designer was invited by Blanka and Candy to create a 50cm x 50cm poster reflecting one year in Helvetica’s life, from 1957 to 2007.
Mark Blamire, the mastermind behind Blanka notes: “The original aim with this exhibition was purely to celebrate something that I love, although we didn’t just want to put on an exhibition for the sake of it. We also didn’t want it to appeal solely to designers. The typeface communicates to the masses, so we wanted the exhibition to reflect significant events that the non-design community could relate to.”
Regardless of age, everyone will recognize many of the significant events portrayed in the exhibit. For example, humanity’s last foray to the moon captured in the 1972 print “Adieu” by Ben Drury, or the more recent millennial non-event portrayed in Adrian Shaughnessy’s “Y2K”. For design or type aficionados, the work is representative of some of the most influential design studios of today.
“Candy and Blanka are tireless champions of design through their events and exhibitions, so we knew that 50 would be something special,” says Jon Parker, Director of Brand Communication at Veer. “They’ve found a fresh take on the Helvetica phenomenon, a novel concept that combines typography, design, and art - three big passions of Veer and our customers.”
The exhibition launched at London’s Design Museum in July, and in addition to its only scheduled North American stop in New York, will travel to various locations throughout Europe.
The Espeis Gallery is located 90 Wythe Avenue (at N. 11th Street) Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC. The exhibit launches on Saturday September 15 at 7 pm. For more information and gallery hours visit www.espeis.nu.
